One of the biggest decisions when picking out a new sofa is whether to go for a fabric or a leather sofa, as it’s a long-term investment. Both have advantages, but the right option depends on how you live, how much maintenance you’re willing to do and how you use your living room every day. So the choice between fabric or leather sofa is more than a matter of looks. Your sofa should fit your lifestyle, compliment your home and give you comfort for years to come.
Homeowners compare fabric couch vs leather couch. Both have their own set of advantages. While a soft and cosy fabric appeals to some, the ageless elegance and easy maintenance of leather appeals to others.
Kenwick Sofa Outlet stocks a large range of fabric sofas, leather sofas, electric recliners, modular lounges, corner sofas, sofa beds and home theatre seating to suit Australian homes.
Fabric vs Leather Sofa at a Glance
Choosing between a fabric and leather sofa can be easier when you compare their key features side by side.
Fabric Sofas: Comfort That Fits Everyday Living
Fabric sofas are covered in woven or synthetic materials such as polyester, linen, cotton or blended fabrics.
Fabric sofas remain one of Australia's most popular choices because they create a warm, welcoming atmosphere while offering exceptional comfort. Their soft finish makes them ideal for relaxing with family, enjoying movie nights or simply stretching out after work.
Many modern fabric sofas are also made with performance fabrics designed to better handle everyday life. Combined with fabric care kits, these materials help reduce the impact of minor spills and everyday wear, making them a practical option for busy households.
Fabric Durability
When shopping for a fabric sofa, you'll often come across something called the Martindale Rating. It may sound technical, but it’s simply a way of measuring how well a fabric can withstand everyday use.
The higher the Martindale Rating, the more resistant the fabric will be to rubbing and abrasion, and so the better the choice for homes where the sofa will see a lot of use.
Think about how durable the fabric is, not just the colour or texture, this is a smart way to make a long-term investment.
Leather Sofas: Luxury That Lasts
A leather sofa is upholstered with genuine or faux leather, offering a durable, elegant and timeless appearance.
A leather sofa is the best way to change the look of your living room. It has a polished look that sets a sophisticated tone from the start, with functional advantages that complement contemporary lifestyles. The leather is a great choice if you want elegant and durable furniture.
Leather is also known for being easy to maintain. This is a great option for homes that value convenience, as most everyday spills can be easily wiped away with a soft damp cloth. Leather is a popular choice for allergy conscious homes because it does not readily trap dust, pet hair or common allergens like many other materials do.
A leather sofa will make a premium statement that will last a lifetime, whether it is going into a modern living room or a traditional family space.
Leather Durability
Probably one of the biggest pros to leather is its durability. Good quality leather is strong in itself and if properly cared for will last for many years in daily use. Rather than just wearing out, it often gets a lovely natural patina that gives it character and makes it look better with age.
Fabric vs Leather Sofa, Which is the Better Choice?
There is no clear winner between a cloth vs leather couch . Both have their advantages . Your lifestyle, budget, maintenance preferences and the overall look you want your living space to have will influence your right choice.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a leather sofa or fabric sofa better?
Both are great choices. A fabric sofa is soft and comfortable for everyday use and is available in a wide range of colours. A leather sofa is highly durable, easy to care for and has a premium look. The right option depends on your lifestyle, budget and preference.
Which sofa is easier to maintain?
Leather requires little day to day care and can usually be cleaned with a soft damp cloth. Fabric sofas also look good when regularly vacuumed and treated with the right fabric care products.
Are leather sofas suitable for homes with pets?
Yes. Pet owners often opt for leather because pet hair is easy to remove and can be quickly cleaned up after everyday messes.
Why are modular sofas becoming so popular?
Modular sofas provide flexible seating options to suit various room configurations. They are ideal for growing families, open plan living and people who want more flexibility.
